Francis Holland’s History Lecture Series takes place after school in the Autumn Term. Led by both students and teachers, it allows the exploration of lesser-known aspects of history. The series is open to all students in Years 10 and above, and attendees have had the chance to broaden their knowledge and understanding, and ask questions on a wide range of topics. Some highlights of this year’s series include talks by Upper Sixth History Prefects Ruqayyah and Violet on Brazil’s colonial history, and Mary and Emily on the complexities of Korea’s past. Miss Boon spoke about Bede, one of the most important sources for the Anglo-Saxon period, and on Thomas Tallis, the Tudor composer. We even heard some of Tallis’ work with a Staff Choir performance of ‘If Ye Love Me’. These sessions were intellectually stimulating and enjoyable, and as a community we value this privilege of historical exploration. To top it off, there are tasty snacks as a bonus! The last talk this term will be on the Demerara Rebellion on Tuesday 21 November at 4.15pm in 1A.
