This week, we celebrated Earth Day and, therefore, we have two different songs that explore the relationship between humanity and the wonderful natural world around us.

Hello Earth by Kate Bush is from her 1985 hugely successful album, ‘Hounds of Love’. The song has a dramatic build up to the heartfelt power of its chorus, and its deep examination of humanity’s bond with the natural world. It depicts a uniquely atmospheric and introspective voyage, setting it apart from Bush’s other creations. The protagonist character faces a threatening situation at sea, and the song can be seen as a reflection on mortality and the interconnectedness of all natural life. Listen out for the other-worldly chanting section that contrasts the poppy, Earth-like verse and chorus and the German whispering before the final line, ‘Go to sleep, little Earth’.

Similarly, “Earth Song” by Frank Ticheli is a captivating contemporary choral composition that beautifully captures the essence of our planet. Presenting a lush harmonic landscape, Ticheli paints a vivid musical portrait of the Earth’s beauty and majesty. The piece is both reflective and uplifting, inviting listeners to contemplate our connection to the natural world while inspiring a sense of wonder and reverence for the environment. The song communicates a profound message regarding the interdependence between humanity and the natural environment, encouraging listeners to contemplate the Earth’s splendour and the urgent need to protect and preserve it.

These two songs are just some of the examples of songs written using themes of the planet, allowing us opportunity to explore a renewed appreciation for the planet we call home.
