Sixth Form Enrichment

The Sixth Form Enrichment Programme is in keeping with Francis Holland’s vision of offering a well-rounded education which goes beyond the narrow confines of exam specifications.

All Sixth Formers attend weekly Speaker programme lectures: a small group of prefects research and invite speakers from a wide range of academic, business and charity backgrounds: recent guests have included explorer Charlie Walker and novelist Dame Rose Tremain.

In addition, we regularly host visits from US, Canadian and European university admissions teams and hold a series of ‘Working Lunches’ every year, where speakers from different career paths talk to interested students about their roles. This year we have been pleased to host the Deputy Head of Mission from the Irish Embassy, an FT business analyst, a corporate lawyer and a sustainable clothing company, among many others.

Sixth Form students are also offered termly Enrichment Elective courses, which are taught for a double period each week. In the Lower Sixth, examples of enrichment electives include Young Enterprise, Medical Ethics and Gold Duke of Edinburgh. In the Summer term, all Lower Sixth students switch to Higher Education electives, tailored to their requirements whether they are taking a gap year, or pursuing a UK or international course of study. Specialist support is offered to students pursuing Oxbridge or medical school applications including interview preparation. We are also pleased to assist students who wish to pursue a degree apprenticeship.

In the Upper Sixth, this continues as taught sessions in the Autumn term, with pupils completing a four-week mental health awareness course and a four week interdisciplinary course. In the Spring term, a series of timed assessments take place.

In this elective you will develop an understanding of how the law touches every aspect of our lives and gain an insight into how the legal justice system works. You will be encouraged to think critically, build arguments, enhance your communication skills and work as a team.

  2. An analysis of a criminal case
  3. An examination of the different roles within a courtroom from witnesses and the jury to barristers and the judge
  4. An opportunity to take part in a mock trial
  5. Contemporary issues in the law
  6. The prison system – the fine balance between punishment and rehabilitation

Company Programme provides a real-life learning opportunity that introduces young people to the realities of the world of work.

Students set up and run their own student company. They make all the decisions about their business, from deciding on their company name and product to managing the company finances. Students can promote and sell to the public through pop up shops and our new online store, YE Trading Station.

Participants gain the practical business experience, adaptability, entrepreneurial mindset and employability skills needed to secure successful futures.

Student companies compete at the local level, and successful candidates advance to the national level. If they succeed there, they proceed to the European competitions.

This can be used to fulfil the skills element of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

This elective aims to inspire students “to actively engage in the pressing realities of climate change” (‘Burning Ice’, Art and Climate Change) through creative exploration.

We will be responding to the amazing artwork on display around the school as part of the Creative Perspectives on Climate Change project, working collaboratively on a number of creative possibilities, including photography, painting, sculpture and printmaking.

Did you do your bronze or silver expedition but have yet to complete all elements of the DofE award?  Are you keen to work towards achieving Gold?  In this enrichment you will get guidance on completing your eDofE portfolio and can work towards the service element of the award.

Do you think you have a good moral compass? Are you interested in debating? If so medical ethics is for you!

Medical professionals frequently find themselves facing moral questions and ethical dilemmas in their line of work and medical ethics provides a framework to help them make judgement calls which are morally sound and right for the patient in question. We will be looking at the framework the doctors use and examining real case studies. This is not just a course for aspiring doctors, if you’re interested in developing your debating skills this is the course for you.

Run by the London Interdisciplinary School (LIS) pupils will learn why this is important, consider complex problems, careers, and the problem of inequality through an interdisciplinary lens.

The UVI will participate in a four-week course on mental health awareness led by Tiffany Evans, who is trained, licensed and accredited as an instructor by Mental Health First Aid England. During this course, pupils will develop a greater understanding of mental health and the factors that influence this; develop listening and communication skills which enable participants to spot potential issues earlier and to effectively explore any difficulties someone may be experiencing; learn to spot the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues as well as where to access support; and finally, understand how to better navigate their environment by learning and adopting techniques to look after and maintain optimum mental health and wellbeing.
