On Tuesday this week, the Classics Club invited professional coin expert, auction house owner, and FHS parent Mr Arturo Russo to give a talk and artefact handling session on ancient Greek and Roman coins.

Mr Russo explained how money developed over time in the ancient Mediterranean and how coins could hold political messages and pass on news across the ancient world. Best of all, Classics Club members were able to see and touch real ancient coins – a rare opportunity to interact with artefacts from the ancient world.

The Classics Department is indebted to Mr Russo for loaning some of these coins to FHS, to help enrich future Latin, Classical Civilisation and Greek lessons. If your child is a budding numismatist, they are welcome to ask Dr Hayes or any of their Classics teachers to see these small pieces of the classical world in person!
