Last Friday, the FHS community had the pleasure of eating basil and lettuce grown using NASA technology by our very own Aeroponics Club, at lunch as part of the delicious Italian Day feast produced by our fantastic Catering Department.

The club has been looking at key ways to reduce pollution and the associated waste that goes along with cultivating fresh produce. This first prompted them to grow their own basil using an aquaponic system (a way of growing plants using fish to supply the nutrients needed for growth). Since their first crop, they have evolved to experimenting with the aeroponic way of growing plants (a way of growing plants through suspending their roots and spraying them over with a fine mist).  This technique generated an abundance of aromatic and high quality mixed leaves at an incredibly fast rate.

What an wonderful way to learn about the science behind and future of sustainable food production!
