The Hardship Fund
We have developed a more comprehensive bursary programme which will allow us to support even more able and ambitious girls. The three strands to this programme are:
Full Bursary
- Awarded at 11+ for seven years
- Currently calculated using seven years of school fees plus an approximate £1,000 per year to account for inflation
Sixth Form Bursary
- Awarded at Year 12 entry for the duration of their Sixth Form
- Allows for an amount per year to account for inflation and all other costs associated with the girl’s academic development e.g. educational trips and study resources
Hardship
- To fund fees (or a % of fees) to the end of the current academic year to ensure a pupil is not removed from school when the parents’ financial situation has changed. If you would like to support our Hardship fund, please follow this link to donate now.
We rely on the generosity of the FHS community to help us develop this programme and increase the number of bursaries available in the future.
Any gift, big or small, is warmly welcomed and 100% of each gift goes to providing additional bursarial support.

“My time at Francis Holland has taught me a variety of skills as well as major life lessons. I have been encouraged to have a good work ethic ever since I was eleven years old and to always aim high. Now I am older and I feel that being in the Sixth Form at Francis Holland is really helping me mature as a person through the wonderful education that it offers. I hope that others can have the chance that I have had. I have not wasted my chance and I won’t waste it. When I leave, I really want to make a difference.” Current Bursary Student
All gifts made to the Francis Holland Sloane Square bursary programme will make a huge difference to our ability to deliver our programme of support. Donations at this level can be pledged in installments across a number of years.
To recognise significant gifts we are pleased to offer the following opportunities to name a bursary at FHS.
- By donating the full amount of a Canon Holland Bursary (Year 7 entry), we would be willing to rename it in your honour for seven years. You will receive anonymised reports on the pupil receiving your bursary twice a year. You will also be recognised on a donor board located within the School.
- By donating the full amount of a Sixth Form Bursary (Year 12 entry), we would be willing to rename it in your honour for two years. You will receive anonymised reports on the pupil receiving your bursary twice a year. You will also be recognised on a donor board located within the School.
“I am extremely thankful to Francis Holland for the support I received. I would say to anyone considering supporting FHS financially to do so, as their assistance opens up a world of opportunities for young women. Francis Holland creates an environment where girls are able to flourish and grow as individuals, not solely academically but artistically too.” Former Bursary Student, aged 23

The Hardship Fund helps cover school fees (or a % of fees) to the end of the current academic year, ensuring that no pupil is removed from school due to an unexpected change in their family’s financial circumstances. We rely on the generosity of the FHS community to support this vital fund and help us provide assistance when it is needed most. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference.

The Governors of the Francis Holland Schools have established a permanent Bursary Fund, to be called the Francis Holland Bursary Fund. The object of this fund is to assist girls from financially-disadvantaged backgrounds to benefit from an education at a Francis Holland school by offering support, normally as full or partial fee subsidies, for all or part of their time at the school.
The Francis Holland Bursary Fund operates on essentially the same principles at the Regent’s Park and Sloane Square schools, always bearing in mind that awards of bursaries are at the discretion of the Head of each school and reflect their understanding of the needs of their pupils. Each school raises its own bursary funds and the funds are accounted for entirely separately, so that all donations are ring-fenced for the support of girls at the school of the donor’s choice.
100% of each gift goes to providing bursarial support. It is Trust policy that girls should not be identified as being in receipt of bursaries during their time at the school. Therefore it may not be possible for a donor to have any contact with the pupil concerned, unless the girl suggests it. However all funders of a Canon Holland Bursary will receive an anonymised report at least once a year on the progress of the girl in question.
Full fee bursaries
Those wishing to support a full fee or sixth form bursary may do so as individuals, or may group together to fund one (for example as a year group). Donations may be by one-off gift or as a series of annual contributions. All such donations will be ring-fenced within the Francis Holland Bursary Fund so that donors can be sure that their support will help one pupil for the duration of the award. If the pupil leaves the school before the termination of the award, then the bursary will be transferred to another girl for the remainder of the term.
As noted, the seven-year bursaries will be known by default as Canon Holland Bursaries. If donors wish to honour particular individuals or bodies connected with the school or themselves, they may propose prefixing that name to the award so that, if approved, the bursary might become, for example, the ‘Joyce Grenfell Holland Bursary’.  Sixth-form bursaries will initially be known by default as Grosvenor Bursaries at Sloane Square. Again, donors may, subject to school approval, get them renamed.
General bursary support
Donations for less than £45,000 will be placed in the non-ring-fenced part of the fund and will offer general bursary provision at the discretion of the Head of the school in question, as described above. Donations of any amount are welcomed in support of this goal. Donations raised specifically for bursaries as a result of other Francis Holland School Trust initiatives e.g. the Annual Fund, on-line auctions and designated school fundraising events, will also go into this part of the fund.
