Last Friday, Year 6 went on a STEAM adventure to East London to attend the New Scientist Live Exhibition at the ExCel Centre. As we made our way there on the underground, the girls particularly enjoyed riding on the recently open Elizabeth Line and were very impressed with the modern interiors!

When we arrived at the show, everybody was amazed by the number of interactive stands there were to explore, scientists to discuss ideas with, and souvenirs to collect! Many of the girls’ highlights included robotics, coding and virtual reality experiences. From the robotic selfie taker to the keyhole surgery simulator, there were so many hands-on activities to get involved in. As well as delivering fun and games, many of the exhibitors encouraged us to reflect on how we can use science and technology to develop a more sustainable future and create a fairer world for all.

After a well-deserved lunch, we listened to an engaging lecture delivered by Sophie Ward, of ‘Soph’s Notes’ fame, who taught us the scientific theory behind finding the positives in five annoying things. We were intrigued to hear about the lady who managed to scratch through her own skull, the benefits of earworms and the positive effect that boredom has in our creative brains. She left us with plenty to ponder on.

At the end of a long day on our feet, we all agreed that this was an exhausting but inspiring day out.
