On Wednesday 30th November, we welcomed Mr Thomas Black into the Junior School for a special charity assembly. Mr Black is Head of Major Giving at the charity, Mary’s Meals. Mary’s Meals serves nutritious school meals to children living in some of the world’s poorest countries. The promise of a good meal attracts these hungry children into the classroom, giving them the energy to learn and hope for a better future. Two years ago, during a tricky year of lockdowns, the Junior School raised just over £11,000 for Bondo School in Southern Malawi. The girls had to reach a target of £10,700 in order to feed the entire school for a whole year. This was achieved through socially distanced bake sales, Christmas tea towel sales and even the girls’ own personal pocket money. In the assembly, one of our Year 6 girls, Cecilia, gave a speech on the essence of charity and why Mary’s Meals means so much to her. Cecilia then presented Mr Black with the Junior School’s bespoke charity spoon. Mr Black was given a tour of the Junior School by the Head Girls before setting off back to Mary’s Meals HQ in Glasgow (with the 8-foot spoon).
