This week at Lunch n’ Learn, Anastasia Newman, an Academic Foundation Programme Doctor and soon-to-be GP trainee, told us about her career in medicine.

It all started when she went to Edinburgh University, initially studying biology and later converting to neuroscience. She first became interested in medicine during a year abroad at Sydney University. Volunteering at a children’s hospital and doing work experience at a care home in Sydney prepared her for med school. Anastasia spent four years (post-grad) at St George’s, in which she worked as a healthcare assistant in various NHS hospitals. She is now in her second foundational practice year – two years spent rotating between different specialties in medicine. In August, she will start her three years of training as a GP after receiving her certification.

The STEAM enthusiasts learned about the pros and cons of being a doctor: although the work is difficult, it is very rewarding. Anastasia also gave us her tips for a journey into medicine, including an essential year abroad and valuable volunteering. The aspiring doctors asked many questions, and we had another successful Lunch n’ Learn Lecture!
