The Junior School hosted an eight team round of the Cicero Cup on Thursday early evening. The Junior School put forward two teams of six comprised of members from Year 5 and 6. An additional group of girls attended the competition to assist as chairpersons and timers. Competition was fierce with Putney High, Connaught House, Eaton Prep and Notting Hill and Ealing High School all competing.

The first round was a ‘seen debate’ in which girls were aware of the motion a week prior to the date of competition. Although they were not aware whether they were proposing or opposing the motion, they were able to prepare as much as possible. The second round was a more complex task – an impromptu debate with girls finding out the motion just 15 minutes before the round commenced.

The final debate posed the motion, ‘This house believes we would invite robots into our homes.’ The girls questioned the dangers and pitfalls of AI which impressed judges and spectators alike. Alas when the decision of a final winner was announced, Notting Hill and Ealing High School proved to be the stronger debaters in this round. Although the Junior School did not progress to the next round, they are already looking to the next competition.
