Fittingly, Black History Month in October was much celebrated at school.  Our key speaker, who spoke to the whole Senior School was Chi-Chi Nwanoku, a small but mighty mixed-race double bass player who has managed successfully to infiltrate the overwhelmingly white world of Classical Music.  She has founded a highly regarded orchestra – Chineke – which comprises mixed-race players (over 32 nationalities are represented).  She delivered a powerful punch on the morning of her visit and the girls were moved by her message and, in particular, by some personal reminiscences recalling moments of shocking racism against her in her childhood.

To support this the History Department very kindly prepared some presentations on black history, focusing on specific black historical figures as well as general issues.  Some classes had an additional session to develop their knowledge further.  Meanwhile two enterprising Sixth formers, Clara Recouso-Larkai and Hana Motaal, have set up a Black Culture Club which meets for the first time on Wednesday 4th November.
