On Thursday 12th February, Andrew Dunsmore visited Francis Holland to deliver a lunchtime talk as part of the Career Conversation series.

Andrew gave an entertaining talk about how to build a business as a photographer and how to develop your client base. Andrew has worked in the industry for over 30 years and his pictures have been seen on the cover of broadsheets and tabloid papers alike! His reputation has allowed him to work with a wide range of organisations and individuals through his company ‘Picture Partnership’. Andrew was able to take the students on a journey beginning with the receipt of the brief to the final publication of the picture. Girls were treated to a collection of beautiful photographs.

They also learnt about the importance of:

  • Finding stories in pictures
  • Being aware of the background and perspective, and how these shape and affect the image
  • Creating a series of shots for features
  • Business planning
  • Building a positive and professional relationship with the client
  • Sticking to deadlines
  • Copyright
  • Having different lenses / cameras ready and available (the shot waits for no man or woman!)
  • Answering, and also being prepared to challenge, the brief.?
