On Thursday, Francis Holland gathered at the Millenium Arena in Battersea Park for the annual sports day event. Despite the harsh weather conditions, there was a real sense of community and togetherness on such a special day.

Throughout the day, there were several student-led stands. The cake sale, for example, was definitely a highlight – there were cakes baked by year groups all throughout the school, from year 7 all the way to sixth formers.

New to sports day this year were the social events led by Lower Sixth and some teachers – this was an excellent addition to the day, with a keepy-uppy challenge, skipping race, bean bag race, and so much more.

There were some brilliant athletic performances and several record-breaking events, such as Minty Thiel in year 10, breaking the javelin record! It was amazing to see so many girls participating in various athletic events, which really showcased the grit and determination that all FHS students possess.

Miss James also organised an ‘open mile’ for anyone who wanted to participate in aid of the Mental Health Foundation. There were hundreds of people on the track together simultaneously, whether it be pupils, parents, teachers, and even babies in strollers! Everyone was cheering and singing songs, sixth formers were commentating races on the microphone, happy music was playing – there was no better way to end sports day!

Near the end of the day, Mrs Elphinstone gathered the school around the stands, where the results were announced. Congratulations, Ashcroft, on a well-deserved win!

Finally, on behalf of everyone at FHS, I would like to thank Miss Newsome, Miss Allen, and the rest of the PE department for putting together such a fantastic event. It was undoubtedly the best sports day yet!
