This week pupils at FHS have been celebrating the importance of science, engineering, technology, and maths through a series of joyful events.

On Monday lunchtime pupils were challenged to complete a treasure hunt around the school, working in teams to solve clues and to collect 9 letters. Our pupils were then tasked with organising their letters into a scientific word. Congratulations to the winning Year 7 team who enjoyed their chocolate prizes!

On Monday afternoon we were delighted to welcome 44 Year 6 pupils from St Peter’s CofE Primary School to complete some ‘eggs-citing’ Easter themed experiments and demonstrations. Pupils were also treated to the show stopping “Elephants’ Toothpaste” and the “Whoosh Bottle”, as well as a demonstration of the “Van der Graaf Generator”. Thank you to the technician team, Miss McLaren, Dr Bourne and Dr Marshall for their support.

Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes saw our pupils in Year 7 – 9 competing in a construction challenge, designing a bridge prototype capable of supporting a 10N weight. Pupils had to meet a tight budget, buying the equipment they needed from a store. Many different styles of bridge were represented from arch bridges to truss bridges. Many congratulations to the engineers of the winning design!

On Thursday lunchtime pupils and staff marvelled at exploding methane bubbles, the hair-raising Van der Graaf generator, illuminating chemiluminescence, and the many interesting dissections that the Science Department had organised. We were delighted to be joined by our Junior School pupils in the first half of lunchtime.

On Friday pupils dressed up to represent their favourite elements, raising money to equip two science laboratories at Mvumi Secondary School in Tanzania. We hope that you enjoyed seeing the Science Department as the Heavy Metals! At lunchtime everyone enjoyed the science themed baked goods and the Science Prefects’ exciting games during the playground takeover. A highlight included Mr Trussell playing 6 simultaneous games of chess!

Thank you so much to all who were involved.
