This week, the Classics Department took Year 8 students to visit the British Museum to complement their study of Roman Britain. Students have recently read stories in Latin about Londinium during the Roman occupation of Britain and have begun to research what life was like in Britain before and after the Roman arrival. In the British Museum, students explored rooms 49 and 50 to examine Celtic artefacts which challenge the notion that the Celts lacked technology and civilisation – as the Romans would have the world believe. They were then able to see how the Romans changed Britain as trade steadily increased and the Britons incorporated Roman ideas.Ā We were also fortunate to have time to visit the Parthenon Galleries and discuss the significance of this impressive temple in the ancient world and the continued debate surrounding these precious marbles. We look forward to seeing how Year 8 incorporate this invaluable research into their Roman Britain projects next term.
