On Friday 7th June 2024, Year 7 enjoyed an uplifting Gamelan workshop in St Mary’s Church, Bourne Street.

Gamelan is the ancient classical music of Indonesia, with a history stretching back almost a thousand years. It consists of an orchestra made up of tuned gongs and bronze percussion instruments, plus a handful of softer instruments, coming together to produce a powerful and distinctive melody. The girls enjoyed trying their hand at playing an array of vibrant decorated instruments including the Bongang, Gambang, Gong ageng and Slenthem, as well as learning about their fascinating history, before playing together as an orchestra in impressive harmony.

Thank you to our visiting Gamelan expert and to our Music Department for organising such a fun, creative and memorable way to learn about Indonesian history and culture.
