Bringing the Royal Shakespeare Company’s adaptation of Great Expectations to life has been a real joy. Charles Dickens’ story, with its vivid characters, rich language, gothic atmosphere, and timeless themes of ambition, love, identity, and redemption, offers a rich and deeply human experience. This version captures the heart of Pip’s journey and gave our ensembles an opportunity to create a show rooted in the tradition of storytelling.

What has made this production especially meaningful is the extraordinary commitment and creativity of our entire team in such a short rehearsal period of just over six weeks. The cast has worked tirelessly (some attending five rehearsals a week!) to inhabit these iconic roles, exploring the emotional complexity and moral ambiguity of Dickens’ world with honesty, bravery and depth. They have embraced both the grand moments and the quiet subtleties with equal care, and on behalf of the whole Drama team, I am very proud of their growth as young actors throughout this process.

Behind the scenes, our backstage crew led in this show by Maya M in Year 10 have all worked hard logistically to support the costumes, props and set changes. Special thanks also go to Talitha L, Year 12, who assistant directed some scenes in the show and was a positive and inspiring role model to the younger cast. This show has been a real example of student collaboration and teamwork. Their initiative, organization, and calm demeanours under pressure have been remarkable. They’ve not only kept things running smoothly, but they’ve led with professionalism and heart, setting a standard that raises the bar for what student leadership in theatre can be at FHS.

Thank you to everyone, cast, crew, design team, and supporters, who helped bring this production to life. It has been a joy and a privilege to work with such a dedicated and talented group. I hope this timeless story moves you as deeply as it has moved us.
