Friday 8th May marks 75 years since Nazi Germany’s formal surrender at the end of the Second World War.
The coronavirus outbreak means that the usual celebrations such as street parties, parades and concerts are sadly unable to go ahead this year. However, there are still plenty of ways to mark this momentous day. We began this morning with a live streaming of assembly which included poetry, readings and prayers from Year 11 and Year 13 pupils, and a musical piece from Inga in Year 8. It was wonderful to join together and mark this very special anniversary as a school.
In order to help us to celebrate further, Head of History, Miss Boon, has kindly shared the following resources with us:
- Click here to listen to an audio extract of short recollections of VE Day.
- The Imperial War Museum have a YouTube channel that will be commemorating VE Day here.
- There is an unpublished poem by Edmund Blunden to which the Imperial War Museum is now giving digital access, and which might be rather nice to read here.
- English Heritage have created a ‘VE Day At Home Pack’ which offers recipe suggestions, dance routines and songs to learn to mark the anniversary. You can access this here.
We hope you find ways to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day at home. If you would like to share photos of your celebrations with us, please send them to mark.kenny@fhs-sw1.org.uk
