Year 12 psychology students went on a very interesting trip to the museum of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis. When we first arrived, we all noticed the gorgeous house and we immediately became very excited to explore his house and learn about his theories. Everyone found his study particularly eye catching, as it had been untouched since he passed away in it. After speaking to some of my classmates, they told me the lecture was very informative whilst also being interactive, engaging and fun. The trip was an amazing experience for everyone.

On Monday, Year 12 Psychology visited the Freud Museum in Hampstead, which was his former home. Sigmund Freud was a famous psychologist known for developing psychoanalysis and pioneered theories about the human mind. Inside, we were captivated by the meticulously preserved study with an impressive library including works by Shakespeare and Nietzsche. Freud also had his own writing and manuscripts in his study, where he developed and refined his ground-breaking theories such as the Structures of the Mind and the infamous Oedipus Complex. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about some misconceptions about Freud as some have tried to discredit his work, we were informed about his pioneering work in the creation of talking therapy which was fascinating to hear as this has been utilised by many to improve their wellbeing. We left with a much clearer view of who Freud was. We also learned about Freud’s early life including him fleeing Vienna to escape persecution by the Nazis, which was very moving to hear about and his commitment to psychology was startling. Along with Freud, his daughter Anna also lived in the house. Anna Freud played a crucial rule in the development and popularisation of child psychoanalysis. The Freuds’ legacy was fascinating to learn about and our visit left us with a deeper understanding of the complexities of Freud’s work. We all thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Freud Museum!
