On Tuesday 20th January, Dr Anthony Ossa-Richardson of Queen Mary College, University of London, delivered a Literary Society talk to an audience of Year 11 and Sixth Form girls, staff and parents on John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

Focusing in particular on Book IX, which our UVI students of English Literature are currently studying, Dr Ossa-Richardson spoke most engagingly on Milton’s use of the Bible, as well as its links with classical epic and medieval theology. Dr Ossa-Richardson also offered an opportunity for the audience to see a 1613 manuscript copy of A Treatise on Angels, an original source text for Milton.

The audience was also invited to consider Milton’s particular uses of language, including his puns and notions of deceit and rhetoric in the much-debated depiction of Satan.
