The Junior School celebrated History Day on Friday 12th March. By 8.15am, the playground was filled with an abundance of important figures from different historical periods. Mr Russell rang the bell, announcing that the girls would not be assuming their usual role as Francis Holland School girls, but that they would instead be members of their specific time period. Reception transformed into Kings and Queens, Year One were Castles and Knights, Year Two embraced the Victorians, Year Three became Ancient Greeks, Year Four turned into Ancient Egyptians, Year Five took on World War II, and Year Six were the Tudors!
The morning activities consisted of the girls acquiring key historical skills on their subject matters. This was achieved through timelines, source analysis, assuming the role of archaeologists and conducting individual fact finding missions. After break, year groups engaged in an art or STEAM activity where they created a prop or piece of costume from their relevant era. Year One created medieval shields, Year Four mummified fruit in canopic jars and Year Five pieced together their very own gas mask boxes to be used as evacuees. The props were used in the afternoon where girls participated in script writing, speech making and drama workshops.
At the end of the day the girls attended a graduation ceremony where they were officially announced as their specific historical figure with medals and certificates. A thoroughly enjoyable day which enabled the girls to immerse themselves into another time period; gaining a new historical perspective.
