On Wednesday 21st September, the weekly History Lecture Series resumed after a two year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These talks are designed to augment our historical knowledge in areas that we may not have had the opportunity to learn about otherwise, and require no prior expertise on the subject. They are open to students, parents, and teachers alike, and are accompanied by delicious refreshments!

This week, we had the privilege of listening to Miss Boon’s lecture on Maria Theresia of Austria: A Woman in a Man’s World. This incredibly thorough talk illuminated the life of the only female Habsburg ruler, and how she not only survived, but flourished in the patriarchal society of the 18th Century. The analytical, well-researched presentation demonstrated the depth of Miss Boon’s knowledge as she clearly explained the actions Maria Theresia took to retain and strengthen her position. Following the lecture, there was also a short Q&A session where we were able to ask any burning questions about the life of this extraordinary woman.

Miss Boon’s presentation highlighted the strength and resilience of an incredible queen, leaving us all feeling empowered and ready to face the challenges of the week ahead.
