On Tuesday 5 May, Mike Carter came to speak to students about his career as a Deputy Editor of the Letters and Leaders Pages of the Guardian, and his work as a Travel Writer. Mike Carter is also author of several travel books.
Girls learnt more about the process of producing a newspaper, and Mikes particular role within that. As Deputy Editor he works as part of a small team to sift through 200 300 emails a day from academics, NGOs, politicians and other members of the public, all of whom would wish their views to be published. Girls heard about the importance of creating a balanced page, one that moved away from the editors own biases and reflected a range of opinions that the readers would wish to see and hear.
