The A level Politics students spent three days in Brussels visiting the institutions of the European Union and developing their understanding of the history of EU integration.
After 2 years of following the commotion of Brexit negotiations, we were thrilled to be able to ground theory in reality and observe the inner workings of one of the most vital historical institutions- the European Parliament. We were given a detailed explanation of the functions and workings of this institution. It was also exciting to be able to enter the main chamber and learn about how Brexit would affect the make-up of this institution. We also visited the Council of the EU and followed in the footsteps of British Prime Ministers attending EU summits. Our interests were further enhanced through the interactive Parliamentarium museum which allowed us to discover political parties in great depth and interactive games which involved understanding the role of MEPs and diversity throughout the EU.
On the trip, we particularly enjoyed learning about the history, development and implementation of the euro in the European Union through an interactive audio exhibition, which also detailed the economic impact on currency of global and interstate wars. We also visited the House of European History, and were able to see the development of what would become the EU in one afternoon. What started as a few countries clubbing their coal and steel together, became a highly influential group of 28 (!) states making decisions for 500 million people.  It was a fantastic time to visit Brussels and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
