Years 2 and 3 braved the drizzle this week on their trip to Wimbledon Common for Francis Holland Foresters. They sheltered from the rain in their very own self-built shelters made from a variety of materials.
Year 2 worked on their own ridge line shelters and tarpaulin lean-tos, carefully tying their half hitches and making sure that the shelters and lean-tos were facing in the right direction to shelter them from the wind and rain. They then took part in an outdoor English lesson on descriptive language, collecting and studying natural objects and coming up with adjectives, similes and alliteration for them. They linked this descriptive language to the setting in their class text, Paddington Bear, and discussed the features of ‘Deepest Darkest Peru’. Afterwards, they used these natural objects to create their own wonderfully imaginative Autumnal masks.
Year 3 impressed us by building ridge-pole shelters, using square lashing skills to tie their logs together. They showed excellent teamwork skills and resilience. Well done Year 3! They spent time studying the insects of the forest and comparing them to their class text James and the Giant Peach. The girls collected and studied a variety of insects in their microscopic containers, discussing the key features of each habitat. Following this, they took their art lessons outside and created natural artwork that reflected the style of Van Gogh. They used natural objects such as leaves, sticks and seeds to create wonderful pieces.
Well done Year 2 and 3 for a superb trip!
