Our Year 8 Charity Reps enjoyed a morning at Katherine Low Settlement, where they took part in a fact finding mission which they will present to their forms in the coming weeks. Two of the girls describe what they learnt below:

“On Tuesday 23rd September, the charity reps and I had a tour around KLS. Mr Mercer and Miss Manelski kindly brought us there. If you didn’t know, KLS stands for Katherine Low Settlement and it’s a charity that as FHS we support. It’s based in Battersea and was established in 1924. It aims to support the community by reducing poverty and isolation, offering programmes for children, young people, older adults and refugees. KLS provides various services, including English language classes, mentoring and community events, letting the people thrive, learn more and socialise with others. The staff and members at KLS were very sweet and welcoming. I found it very fascinating when the lady said that some people first go when they are a child and then come back when they are an adult and then with their children. This shows how loving KLS is to everyone and that they will always be willing to help everyone’s needs. It’s so important for us to support KLS so we can help them make a difference.” – Lavinia L, Year 8

“Visiting KLS was amazing! As we walked in, we were greeted by the colourful mural, created to commemorate their 100th anniversary! The atmosphere was warm and welcoming with volunteers helping out everywhere; it was an amazing experience. The community was vast and wide with many elderly and young children. They often hold groups for certain year groups, for example a 50 plus lunch group! KLS has a large amount of activities for mainly struggling people, not only helping them out with food and supplies but with a safe space full of friends to share warmth and love with! It is a crucial charity and greatly improves the lives of many. KLS gives people the help and support they need.” – Karolina W, Year 8
