On Friday 17th June, Year 7 have been treated to a morning of workshops on the traditional ensemble music of Gamelan from music education specialists Inspire Works. Gamelan is made up predominantly of percussion instruments and originates from the Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese peoples of Indonesia, dating back to around 200AD. Year 7 learnt how to each play one of the gamelan instruments in sections before putting their efforts together for an ensemble performance, whilst also learning about the history of gamelan and the cultural traditions surrounding it, for example, taking off their shoes whilst playing to keep away angry spirits. It was a fabulous way to conclude a busy week of school, with every girl trying something new and honing their rhythmic skills.
