On Wednesday 9^th March, Year 4 were lucky enough to spend the morning outside learning about habitats at Chelsea Physic Garden. After a brisk walk to the garden, we started our session learning about the definition of a habitat and the exciting range of habitats in which animals might live. Our first task of the morning was to create our very own new habitat for mini beasts to live in; these were to become ‘bug hotels’. We split into teams and went around the garden collecting items that would form our ‘bug hotel’. This included anything in the form of dead plants that we could find, pinecones, flower petals, leaves, twigs and ferns. We then all gathered at the potting shed to form our own ‘bug hotel’ where we assembled items that we had collected into our own flowerpot.

After a quick lesson learning about composting, we went to our second activity of the day at the garden ponds. Here we learnt about aquatic habitats, and each had the opportunity to do some ‘pond dipping’. We found a selection of aquatic organisms, including snails and even some frog spawn! We finished the morning in the classroom at the Physic Garden before carefully carrying our ‘bug hotels’ back to school with us.

Overall, we had a wonderful morning out in the spring sunshine, and learnt why animals have become well suited to their unique habitats.
