The loveliest day of the year so far came just in time for a very special day: World Book Day 2026. Celebrations for World Book Day started this week with our librarian Ms Z speaking to the girls about the National Year of Reading to encourage them to “go all” on their interests by reading more about them. The day itself was filled with sunshine and energy as FHS dressed up in their best book character costumes. Cruella de Vil and her 101 dalmatians prowled a playground featuring Winnie the Pooh, Bananas in Pyjamas, Alice in Wonderland, Curious George and many more. The array of costumes and creativity on show was truly inspiring. Away from dress-up, Year 8 enjoyed a visit from award-winning author Sarah Crossan about her new book and the power of poetry. The Year 8 girls were buzzing after the talk with one of them saying she was “very inspirational, and she made me think about reading in a completely different way.” The festivities and celebrations will continue next week as Year 10 and Year 11 will be enjoying an author talk all about Jane Austen. It was a lovely day and an excellent reminder of the sheer enjoyment that reading has brought to all our lives.
