Year 7 pupils started their day with a road safety performance from The Riot Act. Westminster council have funded performances for schools to encourage pupils, who may be travelling independently for the first time, to recognise the dangers they can face crossing the road.

The girls learned about the prefrontal cortex which doesn’t fully mature until they are 25 and means they are less able to judge distances, speed of vehicles and evaluate risk.

They then watched a play featuring 3 school friends, Joe, Tom and Fran, whose distractions on the way to school and peer pressure to make dangerous decisions lead to…(not to spoil the play for Year 8 watching next week). In the following workshop the girls reflected on key messages regarding road safety and prioritising safety over peer pressure.

In the opening survey, nearly all the girls indicated they felt safe on their journey to and from school and hopefully this performance and workshop will help to keep them safe. Thank you for continuing to remind them if they have mobile phones to put them away before they leave the school building and to keep their wits about them at all times when they are near roads.
