The Environment Society has had a very successful year.

FHS Travel Survey

This year, we undertook a travel survey, indicating pupilsÂ’ primary mode of transport to and from school. The results can be seen in the corridor outside the library. We then invited everyone to come along to the library and put a pin into a map of London indicating where they live. A fascinating picture emerged of how far and wide our FHS community has spread. The pins are colour coded so we can analyse where, say, the Junior school families mostly come from or where our Sixth Formers live.

Chicks

We took charge of a set of fertilised chicken’s eggs for two weeks and watched them hatch. We then fed them and held sessions for girls from Reception to Upper Sixth (plus many staff) who all came along and learned about the chicks and how they grow. We undertook some scientific analysis by weighing them every day and constructing a graph of their masses.

We have also been interacting with the BBC show Spring Watch over the past month, suggesting ideas for many of their competitions.

Mini Jungle

Our newest project is to put together a “mini jungle” in the Lab, hopefully with the backing of the Parents Association. We are sourcing insectivorous plants, interesting invertebrates and hopefully some “poison arrow tree frogs” (although they are NOT poisonous at all so don’t worry!). This will be ready for all to see in the new term.

As a society we continue to champion the environment within our FHS and are always working to make everyone aware of how precious our surroundings are and how we need to look after them. This is core to what we believe and we will continue to make this our primary aim going forward.
