On Thursday 14th March, our Sixth Form students enjoyed a mind-expanding talk by AI researcher Laura Caccia.

Laura discussed contemporary opinions of artificial intelligence, elaborating on her own TEDxLondon talk, ‘Is code poetry the new avant-garde?’

Laura began her talk by discussing the importance of pushing art beyond our comfort zone, using Marcel Duchamp’s “Fountain” as an example of ‘avant-garde’ art which pushed the boundaries.

She then presented a number of poems composed of source code, the artificial language we created to communicate with computer systems. The first type of poetry was human readable, the second type was human and machine readable and the final type was fully machine-readable.

Laura’s thought-provoking talk helped students reflect upon the importance of AI in our everyday lives.
