This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Mr Neil Fox, commonly known as ‘Dr Fox’, to our weekly Speaker Programme. Fox is an English radio broadcaster and has worked for many well-known radio stations including Capital FM, establishing himself as one of their most well-known DJs during his 18 years there.

The talk began with Fox explaining how he became a broadcaster. Like many of us, he was unsure as to what he wanted to pursue with respect to his career. However, he explained that after working abroad in the United States, he discovered his interest in the radio business. Following this, he went after this newfound interest and achieved his goal of becoming a well known broadcaster. He described the hard work and dedication required to achieve such a feat, as well as any other goal one may have.

Fox then continued to discuss how the modernisation of technology, such as the development of apps like Spotify and iTunes, had changed different aspects of his career. However, despite this challenge, the radio industry continues to thrive.

It was particularly interesting to hear from Dr Fox, because many students were curious about how to access this area of work and keen to gain more of an understanding of the many different jobs within media and broadcasting. Without a doubt, his talk inspired and informed us to a degree many of us were not expecting, and thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed.

All in all, we found it truly inspirational to listen to Dr Fox’s story. It assured all of us that, even though we may be unsure as to what we want to do when we are older, the possibility of finding a job is not limited or time-pressured, and anything can be achieved with hard work and dedication.
