Reception have been reading the Story ‘The Great Explorer’ by Chris Judge.

They used this story to learn to write lists and discover areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Following on from this story they were thrilled to discover that one of the daddy’s was actually an explorer, embarking on a journey to the South Pole! Mr Champalimaud very kindly volunteered to take a circle time to teach the girls about the South Pole and the preparation for his trip. The girls desperately wanted to go to the South Pole too. So in the afternoons leading up to the circle time they learned about penguins and each designed a penguin using felt, which they stuck on a flag. They named their penguin, signed the flag and created a class poem about Freedom so that their message could reach the South Pole! After the circle time the girls presented their flag to Mr Champalimaud and two girls read the poem out aloud.

They may only be 4 or 5 years old but they know that the world is their oyster, and already their voices will be heard in the South Pole!
