Ligeti was a Hungarian-Austrian composer, described as ‘one of the most important avant-garde composers in the latter half of the twentieth century…and one of the most innovative and influential among progressive figures of his time.’
Ligeti wrote his electronic piece, Artikulation in 1959. Although existing only as a recording, in the 1970s Rainer Wehinger studied the work in great detail, creating a colourful representation of Ligeti’s piece . This is an example of aleatoric (chance) composition, where the choice of sounds and structure were determined entirely by chance.
