On Monday 25th February, we held the annual Morison Verse Competition for all Year 7 and Year 8 girls.

It was a fantastic competition, with some truly hilarious and wonderful performances. First, we gave a warm welcome to Vivienne (Reception), Addison (Year 3) and Katharine (Year 6), who won the Junior School competition and were persuaded to show the Senior School how itÂ’s done. They received whole-hearted applause for their achievements, and their bravery in coming to perform for such a large group of much older girls.

Year 7 recited poems written by famous authors, and Meredie Whitehead was crowned winner for her thoughtful and deeply felt recitation. Runners-up Clementine Bennett-Whitcombe and Ella Gal were specially commended for their energy and comic timing.

Year 8 collaborated on inventive re-enactments of ballads, written by their own classmates after an in-depth study of the poetic form which combines a compelling story with deft versification. Charlotte Callaghan’s ‘Imagination’ was commended for its excellent team-work and creativity by team members Skye Owen, Cristina Garcia-Hoz Sanchez, Isabella Rasmuson, Sienna Spiro, and volunteers Betsy Leighton and Sophie Chevretton.

Eva Vidyaeva’s ‘The Woods of No Return’ created such an effective spooky atmosphere, which would have been impossible without thorough rehearsals, that Clemmie Vass, Becky Atkinson, Scarlett Oliver, Emma Grant-Diaz, and Layla Philips were pronounced winners of the Year 8 round.

Every year, the Morison Verse performers bring poetry alive on stage, and the English Department is immensely proud of their courage, commitment and passion for literature.
