On Tuesday 14th November, Lower Sixth enjoyed hearing about Mr Dyson’s incredible visit to Mvumi, Tanzania along with Miss James, Mika, and Elisabeth. Mr Dyson vividly described their adventure with a range of stories, photos, and descriptions, which we all found to be enriching and thought-provoking.

His presentation made me realise how we are all learners, no matter where we are, what type of roof is above our heads, or how many students there are in the classroom. It is so easy to take many things for granted at FHS: multiple buildings, clean rooms, water, and food. What struck me was that the school children would run to the river (usually a 90-minute walk) and back for their PE lesson in the extreme heat, or that they must wait for rainfall to come to have easy access to water. This is something we can all not even imagine in our day-to-day lives – it made me realise how, although we all have different learning environments, backgrounds, and strengths, we all share a love for learning.

I have personally always felt this in FHS, and it’s something we should try not to take for granted. They are a great role model for resilience, which I believe we should all follow. It is very easy to take things at FHS for granted or feel disheartened when things don’t go quite to plan – it’s important to remember that in the big picture, we are extremely fortunate for the brilliant opportunities on offer at FHS!
