Lily Blackler and Iliana Ilic Report –

‘On Saturday, the Barbados Netball Squad had an excellent opportunity to travel to Surrey Sports Park to be given a challenging netball training session by Tamsin Greenway. Tamsin is member of the England national netball team and plays for Surrey Storm in the position of either Wing Attack or Goal Attack.

We began the session by improving our fitness levels with an intense fitness test. This proved to be challenging, especially after the summer break; however, all girls pushed themselves and achieved very respectable fitness scores.

During our lunch we had the opportunity to watch and analyse Surrey Storm (superleague netball team). We found this method of constructive criticism particularly helpful in that we were able to discover the faults in each of the player’s game.

We then spent the afternoon learning a variety of exciting and dynamic netball drills by Tamsin, especially focusing on our defense. This proved to be helpful as we learnt various new tactics to put in our game play, for example defending behind our players in order to strategically control the opponent’s game.

We finished our training by playing a few netball games in which we put all of the valuable skills we had learnt throughout the day into practice.

Overall, it was a fantastic and rewarding day for the Barbados squad and we will certainly use many of the valuable skills we learnt in future trainings. A big thank you must be said to Mrs Bridges and Miss Allen for organising the training.’
