The Head Girl and the Sixth Form Leadership Team Training Day
The leadership training day last Wednesday was organised to provide the leaders of next years upper sixth and of the school with the confidence required to carry out our new roles effectively. The skills we learnt on Wednesday are not, however, just for our new roles: they will carry us forward into numerous aspects of our lives where an assertive and truly motivational leadership is required.
We did numerous exercises on teamwork, which we were then required to reflect on and ask ourselves what we had done well and what needed improving. It was focused on learning to be decisive in our decision-making through carefully analysing the good and bad aspects of the activities.
The session was wholly motivational. Our instructor, Sarah, from the training organisation Team Thinking, forbade the word try . We were aiming at better than try for next year!
One of the exercises was performed outside. Each of us had to get from one end of the obstacle course to the other with just three planks of wood. The wood could not touch the ground at any point, nor could we. At first it was quite hectic with everyone shouting their own ideas and fighting against the time constraint; however, we soon realised that if we listened to one another, this was much more effective and we could test out all the different methods. Reflecting upon this activity we concluded that we were all eager to try out everyones ideas and we took the time to listen. However, we thought that a single, authoritative leader would have benefited the large group to give more direction.
Overall, the day was a huge success as we left with a new perspective on leadership and with new ideas that we are all excited to try out in the coming months.
