German Christmas Film screening: Der Dritte Mann
Last Friday, the Year 11 and Sixth form German students enjoyed the after school screening of one of the most famous black and white movies: Der Dritte Mann.
Most people are aware that Berlin was divided into four sectors after 1945 but not many know that Vienna shared the same fate with all the attendant everyday problems for the local population and the allied forces including rationing, black markets, and refugees.
The famous Orson Welles movie, shot in 1949 in original locations in Vienna, gives a unique insight into what life was really like in those difficult post-war days. No rationing for us though, and in true Christmas spirit, we tucked into delicious German Christmas treats like chocolate covered “Lebkuchen” and chocolate “Zuckerkringel”.
