Have you heard of dub poetry? Meet Linton Kwesi Johnson, a pioneer of this powerful genre of performance poetry which takes its rhythms from reggae. Johnson became the voice of the Windrush generation, writing in Jamaican patois to protest against injustice wherever he found it. This coming Monday is Windrush Day: this creates an impetus to educate ourselves further regarding this important moment in history and its aftermath.
Listen to the wryly-titled ‘If I woz a tap-natch poet’ for a powerful experience of this unique form of poetry, and check out his piece entitled ‘Tings at Windrush‘, performed in 2018.
