On Tuesday 12th February, Curious Club (including some pupils from Chelsea Academy) debated food security, focusing on “should our school only buy food produced in the UK?”
Initially, the decision was that “no, we should buy food from other countries too”. Students argued that if we could not import food from other countries then we wouldn’t be able to eat chocolate!
At the end of the session, one pupil said “I always end up more unsure what to vote for at the end of these discussions”.
By the end, the consensus was mixed. Powerful arguments for only buying UK produce were: 1) reducing carbon emissions to reduce climate change, 2) reducing water use in Africa for British consumption and 3) supporting British farmers.
During the session, Curious Club tried astronaut food: dried peaches and a dried ice-cream sandwich! (These were not produced in the UK).
