On Wednesday 1st February, the Junior School sent five pupils from Year 5 and 6 to enter the Cicero Cup Debating Competition held at Queen’s Gate Prep.
The competition was fiery with multiple boys’ schools in attendance. Catherine, Lita, Minty, Remi and Amanda showed excellent critical listening skills through regular rebuttals, especially from Catherine who was noted by the judges as an astute and outstanding debater. The final round saw an impromptu debate which gave the girls 20 minutes to go away and prepare points with no assistance from adults. The motion was, ‘this house believes sports stars are excellent role models’. The girls were opposing the motion and they stormed to victory with not one member of the audience voting against them.
Unfortunately, out of the 6 schools present only one could progress to the next heat and the judges decided it was not FHS this time. However, this brilliant event encouraged the girls to broaden their horizons and strengthen their competitive skills.
