Dom Elliott recently joined us from Google to talk about his career in a Developer Marketing Manager role at Google.

Girls greatly enjoyed listening to Dom’s story of his journey from school to working at one of the world’s Internet giants. Dom graduated from St Catherine’s College, Cambridge in 2008 and began his career at Google the same year, after getting a job having completed an internship at the company in his final year at University.

He inspired the girls talking about his extracurricular activities at school and university and how his experiences of throwing himself into a wide range of activities and building up a repertoire of different skills from an early age has led him to a hugely successful role in one of the world’s leading organisations. He emphasised the importance of aiming high, following your dreams and developing your passions in life. The girls were engrossed in hearing about his experience of working on various Google and Youtube projects in the offices in Tokyo, San Francisco and London. We were given a taster of life at Google and what it consists of, with the emphasis being on employee well-being and happiness to bring out the very best from their team.

Dom finished his talk by referring to the key skills that have got him to where he is today: academic ability, fostering positive working relationships, being able to think outside the box and laterally, developing intangible transferable soft skills to project manage teams and Googleness… an elusive Google quality! We greatly enjoyed his talk and hope that our girls are now inspired to work in Tech, realising that there are myriad opportunities within a company like Google, which offers roles that can be varied, exciting and diverse all within one company.
