On Thursday 25th October 2014, Dr Jules Wright visited Francis Holland Sloane Square as part of the Career Conversation series.
She spoke openly and honestly about her career journey. She told the girls that “if the fear of failure stops you taking risks, it stops you being creative”. She added that “failure does not matter. Failure is yesterday’s news”!
Dr Jules Wright outlined her time at school in a small town in Australia, where she excelled in the sciences. This led her to apply to study Psychology at the University of Bristol, where she stayed on to continue her Masters and complete her PhD in Clinical Psychology. She was primarily a scientist, but had been directing plays all through university.
A combination of luck and bravery, coupled with wider recognition of her work, led her to becoming director at The Royal Court. She then worked at the Sydney Opera House, before she moved more towards the world of Art. She now owns a gallery on Dover St that specialises in photography.
Dr Wright passed on another key message to the girls: that they should not be afraid to take risks and grab opportunities, even when their confidence in their own capabilities is not high: “be prepared to say yes, I believe, when the door opens”.
