As British Science Week enters its fourth decade, at Francis Holland we have been reflecting on how the world is changing and how we are adapting to those changes through our Creative Perspectives project with Cape Farewell.
Pupils in Year 10 have been working hard to produce an immersive art installation featuring the responses of pupils in the year group to carefully selected images showing the effects of climate change. We look forward to inviting you to step inside and hearing your views.
On Monday 10th March, pupils attended lunchtime talks by Dr Marshall and Mr Clements. Dr Marshall took us around the world sharing his experience as a science documentary maker, whilst Mr Clements inspired us to look into the future thinking about how energy changes will shape the universe.
On Tuesday 11th March, pupils were invited to marvel at the magic of chemical change, witnessing a fiery ammonium dichromate volcano and the beautiful chemiluminescence of luminol oxidation. They then explored the school on a science themed scavenger hunt.
On Thursday 13th March, Mrs Haydon took us to the cutting edge of science with a fascinating lecture unlocking the secrets of epigenetics. Pupils and staff alike learned how genes are switched on and off, how environment and lifestyle shape DNA expression and why epigenetics has the potential to revolutionise our approach to medicine.
