On Friday 21st April, Year 6 ventured to Hampton Court Palace for a day of historical exploration. Led by a costumed presenter who posed as a laundress for Henry VIII, the day encouraged the girls to use the palace as source material. They explored the notion of hierarchy and status within the Tudor court and how these were reflected in the buildings of the palace. Girls were challenged with analysing the rank and status of those who would have used and occupied the lower and upper parts of the palace. Everyone was amazed to learn how Henry VIII used the palace to demonstrate magnificence and power in every possible way, through lavish banquets, extravagant court life and fabulously expensive art. Highlights included William III’s apartments, the Great Hall, Henry’s kitchens, the Privy Garden and finally the Haunted Gallery. Despite the rain and cold, a thoroughly enjoyable day out.
