Dr Sharon Marshall discussed feminist approaches to reading and reinterpreting classical texts.
Her talk focused on two key episodes in the Aeneid and the Odyssey in which women are abused or criticised. On closer inspection, however, it was clear that different translators have added their own interpretation to the text they translated, adding in criticisms of their own that were not present in the original language. As Dr Marshall argued, translation is actually just another way for a reader to interpret a text in another language.
