This week’s Musical Moment is recommended by our wonderful Operations and Co-Curricular Assistant, Miss Murata. The Italian composer Luciano Berio is best known for his innovative and experimental musical works, including “Sequenze” and is considered a landmark piece in 20th-century classical music.

A lesser known work by the ultra-modern and avant-garde composer is the collection of Beatles Songs – written in a 18th century florid Baroque style – for flute, basso continuo (harpsichord and cello) and classical soprano voice. It is a strange blending of brilliantly written pop by The Beatles, fused with moments of modern clashes and weirdness. Have a listen to the four in the set, you can hear a quite traditional version of ‘Yesterday’ and a quite bizarre re-working of ‘Ticket to Ride’ which are bookended by gradually decaying arrangements of ‘Michelle’. Happy listening!
