On Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th November, the Independent Schools Show took place at the Evolution Centre in Battersea Park. The Show brought together over 25 of the most prestigious and well-regarded British schools under one roof, offering educational advice and information to parents and prospective pupils after one of the most profound and fundamental times of change in the educational world in the past century.

Changes of school at 7 and 11 or 13 are a standard rite of passage for most children. Now with a number of schools going right through, parents have to decide whether 15 plus years in one school is a good idea for their child. Our Headmistress, Lucy Elphinstone, partook in a spirited debate on this universally important topic with two other prestigious Heads, Ben Evans of Windlesham House and Ceri Jones of Caterham, chaired by former Culture Secretary Ed Vaizey.

Mrs Elphinstone highlighted that the stability of remaining at the same school allows children to flourish in a comfortable environment, truly explore their personal passions and form unbreakable lifelong friendships. She did however acknowledge that sometimes a school may not be the right fit for a child, in which case a move may be advantageous, and described how indeed many girls join our Sixth Form from country boarding schools due to the advantages of a London education in terms of preparation for Higher Education and the world of work as well as having the city’s rich cultural offering on our doorstep.

Thank you to Mrs Elphinstone and the other panellists for a thought-provoking and inspirational talk.
